Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandma and godparents. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder caused by word associations as a young toddler. Ford's passion for acting started as a child. She was a part of in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she wasn't a good for the school. Ford applied instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured an interview on her fourth try. A classmate of hers was Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993. However, she made her television debut in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate began her TV debut in the year 1991, appearing on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Tate also regularly worked in theatre and eventually joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy style and humour, which she added to her repertoire in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
